In an effort to reach out to families and professionals who live with Autsim day to day, we are sponsoring an opportunity to come together and share resources and ideas that are available in our community. We are offering this conference to parents, family members, law enforcement, physicians, nurses, teachers, and counselors. This conference is FREE to attendees and appetizers will be served. Session 1 Breakout #1 1:00 - 1:50 p.m. A. Transitioning from High School to Life. Presenter: Sandra Cato This session will provide informational materials for parents and students about how to transition from the school setting to the wookforce and/or college.
Sandra Cato has worked for Social Security for numerous years and presently travels to 17 counties answering Social Security Disability questions in homes, agencies and through public meetings.
B. Music Therapy Presenter: Jennifer Cooley Participants in this session will come away with a better understanding of the importance of music therapy in Autism treatment.
Jennifer Cooley is a Board Certified Music Therapist working for the Judevine Center for Autism-SEMO in Cape Girardeau. She works with children adn adults in the Poplar Bluff, West Plains, and surrounding areas.
Breakout #2 2:00-2:50 p.m. A. Parent's Perspective. Presenter: Dr. Cynthia Brown Dr. Brown offers a unique perspective of living day to day with Autism. Dr. Browns son, Rex was diagnosed with Autism at age 3 years. Rex is now 11 years old and attends Poplar Bluff Public Schools.
Dr. Cynthia Brown completed her residency in Obstectrics and Gynocology at Jersey City Medical Center in New York. She is a member of hte American College of Preventive Medicine, American Public Health Association, Autism Society of America, Mo State Medical Association, and the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District Board of Education.
B. Make It-Take It Presenter: Wray Ann Williams This session will consist of things that parents and teachers can make to work with children with Autism instead of spending a lot of money on materials. Participants will discuss things to make in the areas of communication, fine and gross motor and sensory.
Wray Ann Williams has worked in the Poplar Bluff R-1 Scool District for 15 years. She is a certified Crisis Prevention Institute instructor. Currently a Specialized Training Instructor, she helps with developing intervention plans and strategies for students who have intensive needs.
Session 2 Breakout #1 4:00-4:50 p.m. A. Transitioning from High School to Life Presenter: Sandra Cato (Repeat Session)
B. Behavior and Symptoms Presenter: Lynn Khanuja Participants in this session will receive a clinical presentation including behaviors and symptoms list, learning deficts in children with Autism, and skill sets and instructional plans for parents/familes to help cope and treat children with Autism.
Lynn Khanuja is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Occupational Therapist. She has experience in working with children, adolesents, and adults within the inpatient hospital setting, community mental health center, and within state and public schools systems.
