Temporary Levee Breaks Near Poplar Bluff - Shelter now Open By: Heartland News
Update 4-12-08
Good afternoon to all!
I just wanted to give everyone a brief update of how the Flood Relief Distribution went these last few days:
Over 500 local flood victims were helped in a 2 day, 8 hour distribution effort at the old MAG building this past Thursday and Friday. During that time over $33,000 worth of "vouchers" and approximately $150,000 worth of supplies (cleaning supplies, food, personal hygiene, etc.) were distributed. The volunteers {Fellowship General Baptist, Church of Latter Day Saints, Sierra Osage, Rescue Mission, Bill Taylor (Butler County) and staff, Briggs & Stratton employees, Jim Ward (transporting goods), Poplar Bluff Volunteer Center, and the Chamber staff} were simply AMAZING. Not only were these flood victim's needs taken care of, but also our local economy received an additional $33,000 boost; thanks to the VERY GENEROUS donations from our area citizens and businesses. The media was also very supportive of promoting and highlighting this event.
Just a quick story that I think you would all find very moving: Within two and a half hours on Thursday we had distributed all of the initial funds we had received. One of our Chamber members (Delta Companies) heard the story KVFS 12 had aired Thursday night. Friday morning they called me and said they would donate an additional $5,000 to distribute Friday. What a blessing!
Thank you all for a GREAT event!

SPECIAL ALERT 4/4/08
The National Weather Service has predicted Black River to crest to 18 feet and 6 inches at approximately 1:00 am, Saturday, April 5th.
Because of this, our concerns with the temporary levy repair on County Road 606 could be in jeopardy. Citizens of Broseley and Qulin, who were affected by high waters in the previous event, should be on alert and vigilant during the night for the possibility of increasing high water.
While we fully expect the temporary levy and structure to sustain the waters of Black River, we deem it necessary to inform the citizens of the potential risks.
Issued by the Butler County Commission
