Splish-Splash ...Having a Blast! With summer in full swing most of us are spending time at the pool, Lake, or the River, catching some rays, bar-b-queuing and having an all around great time. But why not burn some calories while your at it? Swimming is a great form of exercise. It uses almost all of your major muscle groups, and will especially help strengthen and tone your upper body. It is also a great cardio workout as it places a vigorous demand on your heart and lungs. And for the average swimmer, swimming backstroke or breaststroke, you will burn about as many calories as a fast walk or slow jog!!! Did you know that exercising for just 3 hours a week will prevent the on-set of diabetes? So why not forgo the brisk walk in the hot sun, and go for a cool, refreshing dip instead!
KEEP HYDRATED
*** Keeping hydrated is very important–especially in the summer months. Each day you should drink half of your body weight in ounces of water. (Example-140 lbs. Means you drink 70 oz. of water). Make it cool water to experience a temporary boost in your metabolism. Drinking cold water rather than room temperature makes your body work hard to warm it-hence the boost in metabolism.
EAT RIGHT
***Summer is the season of great fruits and veggies. But be sure that you get the freshest produce available. There are many highly perishable nutrients the degrade with time and exposure to air and sunlight. So when you are picking out your produce, be sure to get the freshest produce available...and enjoy the great taste and nutrients!
